短文翻译练习(13

Translate the following English into Chinese and English into Chinese:

1.The Pleasure of Ignorance

The greatest pleasure of ignorance is, after all, the pleasure of asking questions. The man who has lost this pleasure or exchanged it for the pleasure of dogma, which is the pleasure of answering, is already beginning to stiffen. One envies so inquisitive a man as Jowett, who sat down to the study of physiology in his sixties. Most of us have lost the sense of our ignorance long before that age. We even become vain of our squirrel’s hoard of knowledge and regard increasing age itself as a school of omniscience. We forget that Socrates was famed for wisdom not because he was omniscient but because he realized at the age of seventy that he still knew nothing.

The Pleasure of Ignorance

The greatest pleasure of ignorance is, after all, the pleasure of asking questions. The man who has lost this pleasure or exchanged it for the pleasure of dogma, which is the pleasure of answering(free translation), is already beginning to stiffen. One envies so inquisitive a man as Jowett, who sat down to the study of physiology in his sixties. Most of us have lost the sense of our ignorance long before that age. We even become vain(conceited, having too high of one’s own ability) of our squirrel’s(metaphor) hoard(small storage) of knowledge and regard increasing age itself as a school of omniscience. We forget that Socrates was famed for wisdom not because he was omniscient but because he realized at the age of seventy that he still knew nothing.

Explanation:

This paragraph is taken from the well known essay The pleasure of Ignorance by Robert Lynd, famous English modern essayist.

It is the last part of the whole article. That is to say, it is the conclusion and summery of the author. The original passage is an argument with rich witty languages. The author introduces his life philosophy that a man, whose life is short and abilities are limited, should always keeps his curiosity and interests towards the outside world, which is boundless and limitless. Ignorance, which in another word means the strong desire for knowledge, is oxymoronly used here, for normally we don’t use it together with the word Pleasure, which is always associated with something positive. So in order to keep the original figure of speech, we’d better translate the title literally: 无知的乐趣。

One Point of Nine

The inspection group has gone. It gave the county 98.1 points in total. This very much perplexed the members of the committee responsible for welcoming the inspection group. Of the eleven counties in the city, their county had been the most hopeful of winning the competition. Why had they taken off one point nine?

The conference room was filled with thick tumbling smoke, as were the minds of the conferees with confused thoughts.

Silence, bewilderment and oppressive atmosphere in the room, everyone was puzzled over the missing one point nine.

“Only one point nine short, …one point nine, …” the director of the committee was puzzling over the problem, blinking his eyes and murmuring the figure.

“Ninety-eight point one, one point nine short,…” echoed the director of the County Government Office sitting nearby. Suddenly he had an inspiration. Giving the table a loud thump, he shot up from his seat, and yelled, “I’ve got it! It must be because there was no wine at the welcome banquet.”

“No wonder,” the director of the committee also rose to speak, “the head of the group hinted to me the moment he came, ‘Treat the guests vine and everything will be fine.’”

“Wine and dine, and everything will be fine!”

Silence, bewilderment and oppressive atmosphere again dominated the room.
